Reporting to the Director of State and Local Tax.  This position has primary responsibility for preparing and reviewing all state and local direct and indirect tax matters including income, franchise and sales and use taxes. This individual will support the Director of State and Local Tax to operate as the subject matter expert for all state and local taxes including  unitary, combined and separate state tax compliance responsibilities, planning, and research to minimize cash taxes and financial statement expense. Additional responsibilities include income tax accounting for state and local taxes and the blended state tax rate; assisting in developing and updating processes and procedures to ensure compliance with state and local tax rules, income tax accounting rules, and internal control requirements for income taxes under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (“SOX 404”). 

Key Responsibilities - 

  • Prepare complex combined, unitary, and separate state and local income and franchise tax returns and applicable adjustments.
  • Ensure timely and accurate state income and franchise tax returns, extensions, and estimates.
  • Prepare calculations for the state income tax provision and application of income tax accounting rules under ASC 740, including other applicable U.S. GAAP accounting rules with a focus on the state tax provision and the state and local blended tax rate.
  • Assist in calculating the state and local blended tax rate including: monitoring for state tax law changes, as well as timely analysis and calculations of the impact of tax law changes on state temporary differences and deferred taxes.
  • Identify and calculate state and local uncertain tax positions (ASC 740) and ASC 450 reporting for interim and year-end reporting
  • Monitoring and refreshing sales and use tax policies to provide direction for billing, credit, sales, and external customers.
  • Calculate state and local apportionment factors, including improving data gathering and transference process, analyses and calculations.
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of business unit structures for financial accounting and management systems and integrate this information into the legal entity structure for tax reporting.
  • Facilitate timely and efficient capture of relevant data for areas of responsibility, and enable a controlled effective process.
  • Respond to state tax audits and inquiries, proactively ensure the documentation adequately supports future state tax audits, minimizes taxes and penalties.


  • Minimum 5+ years of experience with a significant focus on state and local tax compliance and tax accounting under U.S. GAAP, preferably including employment with a Big 4 accounting firm and a large domestic publicly held corporation.
  • CPA or MS in Tax preferred.
  • Strong and broad based knowledge of federal and state and local income tax accounting rules and income tax compliance.
  • Strong problem solving, issue isolation, detail oriented, organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task and complete complex assignments on a timely basis.
  • Ability to thoroughly evaluate processes and make necessary changes.
  • Knowledge of CorpTax, strong PC skills, knowledge of PeopleSoft and Vertex are a plus.
