Located at our Lorton, Va. facility, we seek a dedicated individual who reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor will be responsible for leading and directing the day to day activities of the maintenance department.

The Lead Mechanic will provide technical assistance and training to the maintenance department and will lead and oversee mechanical repairs during unit outages.

Hands on duties include overseeing the inspection, preventative maintenance and repair of all plant equipment including pumps, fans, compressors, hydraulic systems, gear boxes and piping systems include:
  • Support the daily work plans and schedules of the maintenance department, as well as report on maintenance work productivity and performance as directed.
  • Provide daily direction to department personnel with regard to daily work plan priority, changes or challenges and their resolution.
  • Execute Preventive Maintenance program.
  • Complete yearly safety and environmental training as provided and required by COVANTA.
  • Participate with the Safety Process and VPP Programs.
  • Provide safety audit function for routine and major maintenance work.
  • Assist in incident and accident investigations.


  1. High School Diploma/GED required (technical degree preferred)
  2. Must have a minimum 3 years experience in the repair and maintenance of power plant equipment including:
    • NBIC Boiler code work,
    • ASME Power piping,
    • Job setup, execution planning and time estimating.
3. Prior supervisory experience required.
4. Desire and ability to provide leadership to team for daily and routine work direction.
5. Desire and ability to mediate conflicting priorities among maintenance department personnel and between operations and maintenance departments.
  • Must be able to wear a full face respirator and perform physical activities while wearing the respirator.
  • Must be able to do a considerable amount of walking, kneeling or squatting, standing, and climbing to the various levels of the plant.
  • Will have to enter the boilers, with or without scaffolding, to inspect boilers and check the status of work being performed.
