Covanta is hiring for a Director of Fire Protection Engineering.  This position can be based out of Morristown (NJ), Chester (PA) or Philadelphia (PA).

In this role, the selected candidate will:

Provide strategic leadership for the Covanta Fire Protection program, prioritizing work and driving programs throughout the corporation. 
Develop key partnerships with vetted external fire protection engineering firms, and track progress to ensure quality projects are completed in a timely fashion for Covanta. 
Create and maintain key corporate fire protection standards and guidelines, and work across Corporation for present facilities and future growth opportunities to ensure requirements of NFPA, API, local and building code and insurance industry loss prevention guidelines are met. 
Review and implement 3rd party insurance audits findings of existing operating facilities.

Provide leadership and oversight of contracts and engineering design for Fire Protection systems in Covanta. 
Evaluate and select new detection and alarm technologies and external engineering design firms to enhance and upgrade fire protection systems. 
Provide oversite to and approve of alliance contract engineering firms, reviews and approves detailed design work towards new facility construction or major modifications at operating facilities.
Prepare preliminary system design & layout to support new business development.
Provide technical support to operating Waste to Energy facilities.
Analyzs operating plant problems or equipment failures & provides corrective changes. 

Essential Functions:

  • Project management and construction background and expertise, large capital project expertise
  • Fire Protection Engineering expertise, including fire and alarm systems, fire suppression systems (including wet, dry, deluge, water spray, as well as supporting infrastructure and preventative maintenance).
  • Life safety, including egress, exit signage, and emergency lighting
  • Conduct Fire safety reviews and write specifications for vendor bid packages
  • Assist in commissioning and acceptance testing
  • Provide guidance on ongoing inspection, testing and maintenance support for fire protection systems
  • Experienced in hydraulic modeling software
  • Assesses plant equipment condition and failure causes based upon knowledge, experience and available O&M records to develop cost effective improvements.
  • Places new equipment in service to include providing on-site consulting/overview of equipment installation and preparation for service;
  • Provides troubleshooting of the facility infrastructure and production equipment to support plant operations.
  • Determines feasibility of designing new or modifying existing facilities considering costs, available space, time limitations, company planning, and other technical and economic factors.
  • Prepares system layout and detailed drawings and schematics. Analyzes test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
  • Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications.
  • Plans design tasks so both the design and construction will be achieved within budget constraints.
  • Compares final design for compliance with contract documents. 

  • Minimum Bachelors of Science degree in fire protection engineering or the equivalent from an accredited Institution
  • Minimum 15 years engineering experience.
  • Certified Fire Protection Specialist, member of NFPA desirable
  • Capital project experience in coordinating overall fire protection requirements and design specifications with local building and fire code officials based on local building and fire codes, NFPA standards, and recommended practices.  Must be able to work on multiple concurrent projects with minimal supervision.
  • Requires experience with all phases of a project including preliminary conceptual system design & layout, detailed design, equipment selection & layout, construction specifications, equipment testing and start-up problem resolution.
  • Experience with facility operations support is desirable.
Must have effective written and oral communication skills; must be able to analyze data, write technical reports, and develop work packages to implement recommendations and the ability to handle multiple assignments.
